Why does a person laugh on grass?

Listen to the article:

Almost everyone who has ever used weed has had a laugh at some point. Authors Jack Margolis and Richard Clorfene perhaps best explain the merriment that cannabis can induce:

“Something that’s really funny, like hearing a good joke, can turn you into a convulsing maniac, writhing in agony and begging for help. Going out in public in this frame of mind can be risky because of the laughing problem, because you might find yourself laughing at people who aren’t in the same mood and can’t see what’s so funny.” — A Child’s Garden of Grass: The Official Guide for Marijuana Users

So what is it about weed that makes everything more fun?

Laughter 101: What exactly is it and why does it feel so great?

When you think about it, laughter is a pretty wild concept. Spontaneous, unconscious and primitive laughter erupts deep within us and is the language we speak and understand universally. And it’s not just about people. Some animals also laugh – some say there are 65 different species.

Laughter has a unique social dimension. People laugh a lot more when they are around others. We are thirty times more likely to laugh in social settings than when we are alone. Laughter is also contagious. Hearing the laughter of another can trigger a fit of giggles, as anyone who has ever heard chuckles and snorts at a comedy show can attest.

The social element of laughter appears to have multiple functions. On a personal level, laughter is good for us. It also supports social bonds, strengthens relationships and de-escalates negative situations.

It can also have health benefits: When we laugh, we breathe more deeply, stimulate our heart, lungs and muscles, and increase the production of feel-good endorphins, which relax the brain. Laughter can reduce stress, improve mood, ease pain and even boost the immune system. In other words, laughter can be one of the best medicines.

“Laughter is not related to just one neurotransmitter or hormone…laughter can increase endorphins and dopamine and slightly decrease cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline — and more,” said Dr. Codi Peterson PharmD, Pharmacist and Chief Scientist at The Cannigma. Endorphins and dopamine give us a sense of pleasure and elation, while cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine are produced in response to stress.

Scientists believe that there are two main types of laughter: involuntary and intentional. Unintentional laughter is a reaction to an external event, such as seeing something hilarious and a double laugh.

In contrast, intentional laughter is more controlled and is often used to break up a conversation and keep it friendly. Obviously, most of us crave the natural high you get from spontaneous, deep laughter.

How can cannabis make you giggle?

There are few studies that examine the link between weed and laughter. But experts like Peterson paint a broad picture of how cannabis affects the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and other body systems to induce a fit of laughter.

“The endocannabinoid system is the link between all of our different body systems,” Peterson said. The ECS interacts with our endogenous opioid system, the system responsible for producing endorphins, the body’s innate stores of opiates that are released when we feel pain, pleasure, or laugh.

THC appears to interact with certain endorphin receptors, making the endogenous opioid system more sensitive, Peterson explained. In other words, THC can make a person laugh.

Peterson suggests that cannabis may also affect oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that strongly influences social behavior. “Oxytocin is responsible for social reinforcement or reward for being social,” Peterson said. “In short, oxytocin promotes prosocial behavior such as smiling and laughing.”

In general, weed works in different, complementary ways to create a context for laughter to come more easily. “The net effect is generally a disinhibition or softening of our defense mechanisms,” Peterson said. “This allows us to laugh more freely and enjoy the feeling of laughter.”

However, it is important that tolerance and dosage also affect the degree to which we laugh after cannabis, and low doses can be different from high doses. So if you’ve noticed that your weed-induced giggles are diminishing, it might be time for a reset.

Strains, Terpenes, Cannabinoids: Will Some Make You Laugh More?

While the science behind weed-induced laughter is scarce, dedicated canners say certain cultivars seem to induce laughter more, according to reddit. Some swear by pies, while others prefer Tangies.

According to Leafly reviewers, the most popular strains to make you laugh include Blue Diesel, Chemdog, Sweet Diesel, Black Diamond, Mango Kush, Church OG and the aptly named Laughing Buddha.

Dan Wilson, editor of Visit Hollyweed, believes the connection between cannabis and laughter is facilitated by the plant’s ability to improve mood. Anecdotally, many consumers also point to certain terpenes as promoting relaxation and laughter. “Terpenes in cannabis may have antidepressant properties – such as linalool and beta-pinene,” commented Wilson. Other stress-relieving terpenes like caryophyllene and myrcene can also lift your spirits and help you feel ready for a little recklessness.

However, Wilson cautions that too much THC can also lead to anxiety, which of course dampens the fun. In this case, the presence of CBD can help to moderate the effects of THC.

After all, deducing which particular compound in weed is the key to laughter is too reductionist. Instead, there is probably an attendant effect – the idea that the sum of all the compounds leads to certain effects. The scenery and environment probably play a big role as well, making it a lot of fun to be with a group of friends.

“Smoking weed has always brought people together, made them more social and gave them an atmosphere of fun and happiness,” Wilson said. “Laughing and enjoying life is part of weed culture. That’s something the plant teaches us.“
