Details
Cannabinol (CBN) is a cannabinoid found in hemp plants (Cannabis). It is a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), formed through the gradual degradation of THC in the presence of oxygen. CBN acts as a mild agonist at the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, with lower affinity compared to THC. While it can have psychoactive effects similar to THC, achieving these effects requires significantly higher doses.
CBN preferentially binds to the CB2 receptor, which is mainly expressed on various immune cells, such as T cells, B cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Activation of CB2 receptors by CBN may induce apoptosis in these cells and inhibit the production of various cytokines. CBN shows minimal affinity for CB1 and has a weak effect on the central nervous system.
It is important to note that CBN is not psychoactive. However, it is often associated with a physical effect that leads to drowsiness.
Current research attributes CBN's sedative effects to its ability to activate CB2 cannabinoid receptors.
Studies indicate that CBN may help regulate the immune system. One notable study compares the effects of this cannabinoid to pharmaceutical sedatives like diazepam. Researchers at SteepHill found that consuming a dose of 2.5 to 5 mg of CBN provides a sedative and body-relaxing effect comparable to a dose of 5 to 10 mg of diazepam.
When these substances are administered in the correct ratio and dosage, they can be very effective in promoting restful sleep.
The effects last for approximately 5 to 6 hours.
