In what doses can CBD be used?

CBD has countless health benefits, but not everyone knows how much CBD can be taken. Cannabidiol (CBD) is just one of the 60 active compounds found in the cannabis plant These active compounds, known as cannabinoids, affect our bodies in a variety of ways. Don’t confuse CBD with THC, CBD is not a psychoactive compound that changes your state of mind, it is purely a drug;

Current research shows that CBD can help with the following conditions:

  • reduction of anxiety and depression
  • improve sleep
  • reducing seizures in people with epilepsy
  • reduction of pain and inflammation in the body
  • improving heart health
  • improving symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Whatever health condition you are using CBD to treat, it needs to be taken in the right amount or it may not work as you expect. Sometimes it can be very difficult to know what amount of CBD you should use, as CBD is not regulated in any way and there are no official recommended dosages;

What research says about CBD

CBD has been the subject of much research and debate in recent years. One study (link to study) shows that CBD is a relatively safe treatment. However, the study did not show that there is one universal dose of CBD that every patient should use. It only highlighted the fact that test subjects respond to different doses of CBD. Most human studies use doses roughly between 20 and 1500 milligrams per day. We don’t know much about CBD, but the hemp industry is growing steadily, so it’s likely there will be more studies and information on CBD use in the future;

How to determine the correct dosage

The dose of CBD you should take depends on a number of factors, including your body weight, the health problem you are being treated for, your individual body and the concentration of CBD in the product you want to use;

So there are many variables that determine the amount of dose. In any case, always consult your doctor about the appropriate dosage and possible risks before taking CBD. If your doctor makes no recommendation and you decide to take CBD, never start with high doses, but small doses that you can gradually increase to see how your body responds;

This means you shouldn’t start with more than 20-40mg a day, after a week you can increase the dose by 5mg for example and continue until you feel that CBD is helping to treat your symptoms. If you take CBD for pain management, for example, and you take 40mg, after a week you can increase the dose slightly and you may feel that your pain is more tolerable;

Always keep a record of the dose you take and observe how it affects your symptoms. With some products it’s easy to tell what dose of CBD you’re taking, but with others it’s harder. However, sometimes you can calculate the amount yourself, for example if you have a 10ml bottle that says it contains 1000mg of CBD and it contains 200 drops, then you calculate that 1 drop will have roughly 5mg of CBD;

Is it possible to overdose on CBD?

A 2001 study (link to study) showed that even when taken in higher doses (around 1500mg per day), it is relatively well tolerated by the body. Another study from 2017 (link to study) only confirmed this. However, care must be taken when taking CBD with other drugs, the combination can cause liver damage. There is very little information on the possible side effects of CBD. Possible side effects include fatigue, diarrhea, lack of appetite and weight change. Since CBD products are not regulated in any way, you should always buy only quality products from verified brands and sellers to ensure that you are not buying unsafe products. Always consult your doctor about the actual use and dosage, especially if you are taking any medications;
